A More Flexible Way to Replace Commercial CFL Lamps
Compact fluorescent lamps are still found throughout offices, hotels, schools, healthcare facilities, retail spaces, restaurants, corridors, stairwells and other commercial buildings. When the fixture itself is still serviceable, an LED retrofit can allow a facility to upgrade the lamp without automatically replacing the entire luminaire.
HyLite’s current CFL replacement family includes two distinct G24 retrofit formats: the Omni-Bulb and the Plug-In VL Lamp. Both offer selectable wattage and color temperature, but the lamp shape and light distribution differ. Choosing between them should start with the existing fixture, socket orientation, base, ballast and desired light pattern.
Which HyLite CFL Replacement Should You Review?
Start with the fixture and the type of light distribution you need. Then confirm the exact base, ballast and installation requirements before ordering.
| Existing Need | Product to Review | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Broad, omnidirectional distribution or mixed fixture orientations | HyLite Omni-Bulb | Compact omnidirectional design; current specifications list 360° illumination and horizontal/vertical orientation capability. |
| Plug-in CFL fixture where a wider forward beam and compact plug-in form fit the application | HyLite Plug-In VL Lamp | Current VL specifications list a 120° beam and G24 retrofit design. |
| Not sure about pin count, base, ballast or wiring method | G24 LED Selection Guide | Identify the G24 base family, pin configuration and ballast requirements before choosing a lamp. |
Ballast Compatibility Must Be Confirmed Before Installation
The current Omni-Bulb and VL Lamp specifications support ballast-compatible and direct-wire installation paths, but the ballast cannot simply be assumed to be compatible. For a Type A installation, verify the exact ballast model against the current HyLite compatibility list.
If the ballast is not listed as compatible, is failing, or cannot be verified, follow the current Type B / direct-wire instructions. Electrical modifications should be completed by qualified personnel following current product instructions and applicable electrical requirements.
Why Replace CFL Lamps with LED?
Lower Lamp Wattage
Current HyLite specifications show 8W–15W LED settings used to replace common 18W–42W CFL lamps, reducing energy consumption by approximately 56%–62% in listed replacement pairings.
Fewer Relamps
A rated life of up to 50,000 hours can reduce relamping frequency in facilities where access and maintenance time matter.
Selectable Inventory
Four wattage settings and four CCT choices can reduce the number of separate replacement configurations a facility needs to stock.
No CFL Mercury
HyLite’s current LED specifications state that the lamps contain no mercury and are designed with recyclable materials.
Before You Order a CFL Replacement Lamp
A few fixture details can prevent compatibility problems and help HyLite identify the right product and installation path.
Photograph or record the full CFL model number and wattage.
Confirm the G24 family and whether the socket is 2-pin or 4-pin.
Record the ballast manufacturer and exact model number.
Confirm the fixture’s actual line voltage before installation.
Note whether the lamp mounts vertically, horizontally or in another position.
Identify dimmers, sensors, controls or other connected equipment.
Confirm dry/damp conditions and whether the fixture is enclosed.
Provide fixture count so product selection and inventory can be reviewed together.
Include clear photos of the lamp, socket, ballast label and overall fixture.

Frequently Asked Questions About CFL-to-LED Retrofits
Can I replace a commercial CFL lamp with LED without replacing the fixture?
In many applications, yes. The existing fixture, G24 base, pin configuration, ballast, voltage, orientation and installation method still need to be confirmed before selecting the LED lamp.
Do I need to remove or bypass the CFL ballast?
Not always. A ballast may remain only when the exact ballast is verified on the current HyLite compatibility list. If it is incompatible, failing or cannot be verified, follow the current Type B direct-wire instructions.
What is the difference between the Omni-Bulb and Plug-In VL Lamp?
Both current families offer 8W–15W selectable wattage and four selectable CCTs. The Omni-Bulb is an omnidirectional form with 360° illumination, while the VL Lamp uses a plug-in form with a 120° beam. The right choice depends on the fixture and desired distribution.
How do I know which G24 base I have?
Remove the existing CFL and record its complete lamp marking, then confirm the pin count and socket. HyLite’s G24 selection guide explains what to check before choosing a replacement.
Are HyLite CFL replacement lamps dimmable?
Current Omni-Bulb and VL Lamp specifications list reverse-phase and 0–10V dimming. The existing controls and exact installation configuration should be reviewed before ordering.
Can these lamps be used in enclosed fixtures?
The current 8–15W Omni-Bulb and Plug-In VL spec sheets state that these models are not suitable for enclosed fixtures. Confirm the current spec sheet for the exact model before installation.
