The Reagan Library's LED Transformation

As one of California’s absolute “must-see” destinations, the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library offers visitors a sweeping look at history. The crown jewel of the complex is the Air Force One Pavilion, which proudly houses both the iconic Air Force One and Marine One aircraft. However, maintaining the visual grandeur of such a massive, historic space requires exceptional lighting, and the building's 20-year-old lighting system was due for an upgrade.

To bring the pavilion’s lighting into the modern era, the Presidential Library sought a highly efficient solution to replace their outdated 500W HID lamps. The old 500W system was becoming an operational burden and requiring frequent, costly maintenance cycles. By pivoting to advanced LED technology, the library aimed to reduce their energy footprint, eliminate the constant need for lamp replacements, and secure a reliable, long-term lighting solution.

“Our exhibit lights in the Air Force One Pavilion here at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library are located in such a way that it makes them difficult to replace. So we are very pleased with the longevity of the Lotus lights which also reduces our maintenance costs. Even though they are on almost 24/7, we get years of service from them.”

Existing Infrastructure? No Problem for the Lotus Lamp

Upgrading the lighting in complex high-ceiling architectural spaces usually brings the headache of tearing out old infrastructure and dealing with extended downtime. The HyLite LED Lotus Lamp (40/60W) completely bypasses these hurdles. Engineered for effortless retrofitting, it allowed the installation team to reuse the pavilion's existing housings, transforming a potentially massive renovation into a streamlined, budget-friendly upgrade.

To properly illuminate the aircraft and the expansive hall, the facility selected 97 of the 40º Lotus Lamps. This adaptable design offered the installation team two major advantages:

Easy Integration

The lamps were easily retrofitted directly into the pavilion's existing fixtures using the GX16D adapters, saving both time and labor.

Standalone Flexibility

The team wasn't restricted to the building's original lighting layout. By utilizing the lamp's independent mounting capabilities, they strategically placed additional units to eliminate shadowed areas. This flexibility allowed them to highlight intricate aircraft details that the legacy grid simply couldn't reach, creating an immersive, brilliantly even visual experience.

A Low-Maintenance, Long-Term Solution: In a high-traffic, monumental space like this pavilion, minimizing maintenance is crucial. Upgrading from the old 500W HID lamps eliminated the need to constantly bring in costly lift crews to replace burnt-out bulbs, saving the facility significant time and operational costs. Coupled with exceptional longevity and a high Color Rendering Index (CRI), the HyLite Lotus Lamp proved to be the ideal solution.

One-of-a-Kind Aesthetics and Versatility

Showcasing a historical artifact like Air Force One requires exactly the right visual tone. To achieve this, the library utilized the Lotus Lamp’s CCT Selectable feature, ultimately choosing a crisp, clean 4000K option. This specific setting brings out the gleaming details of the aircraft without casting harsh or unnatural hues. Because the Lotus Lamp allows the end-user to dictate the room's aesthetics, facilities can easily toggle between 3000K (Warm White), 4000K (Neutral White), and 5000K (Daylight) to perfectly suit their space.

“We also like the ability to adjust color temperatures for different parts of the exhibit. The lights specifically set to highlight the Air Force One plane are set to a higher temperature to enhance the exterior colors. The rest are set warmer colors to provide ambient lighting inside the building. With the recent change, we hope to get several more years of use from the lights before they need replacement again.”

Beyond serving as a daily museum exhibit, the Air Force One Pavilion stands as one of the most unique private event venues in the United States. Throughout the year, the expansive space transforms to host:

High-Profile Political & Policy Events
Corporate Galas
Non-Profit Dinners & Conferences
Executive Board Meetings

Transitioning between a daytime tourist attraction and an elegant evening gala requires versatile, heavy-duty lighting. The HyLite LED Lotus Lamp seamlessly meets the high demands of these diverse events, proving that even historic spaces can benefit from cutting-edge lighting technology.
